The Rejuvenation of Spring - March 31, 2010
I absolutely love this time of year; the sun has melted the snow, the trees are beginning to bud, and it is remarkable to witness everything come to life. With this rejuvenation that we call spring time, we also see a revival of spirit. People are outside working in their gardens, running and biking along all the great trails we have in the Welland riding, and feeling a little bit more optimistic as the days become longer.
This was a special day for me as I spent the morning at Centennial Secondary School in Welland raising money for the people of Haiti. The citizens of Haiti have been devastated by a massive earthquake this past week, and I felt it was my duty to do everything that I could to help. I donated 28 party tray sized pizzas to Centennial School, and along with the help of several teachers and students, we sold them at their lunch hour for a dollar a piece with all the proceeds being given to the rescue effort in Haiti.

Leanna Villella is poised to represent the Conservatives in the next federal election.
The long-time owner of Rose City Travel won the party’s nomination for the Welland riding, beating out former candidate Alfred Kiers and St. Catharines regional councillor Bruce Timms at the nomination meeting last week.
“I’m honoured to be the candidate for the Welland riding,” Villella said. “We had three qualified candidates, no doubt about it, and I’m happy to have won.”

WELLAND — A political newcomer toppled a veteran politician and a former Conservative candidate Thursday night, winning the right to carry the Tory banner for the Welland riding into the next federal election.
Local businesswoman Leanna Villella knocked St. Catharines regional Coun. Bruce Timms out of the running on the first ballot. Timms finished third behind Wainfleet greenhouse operator Alfred Kiers, who in the last federal election came within 300 votes of winning the Welland seat.
Out of 376 votes cast on the first ballot, Villella led the race with 143 votes, followed by 120 votes for Kiers and 110 votes for Timms. Three ballots were spoiled.

An electric conservative crowd came out in droves to elect the first woman to ever vie for the federal nomination.

A sense of nostalgia came over the room as Allen Pietz was introduced, the last serving conservative MP for the riding.
“People know that it’s our time, our riding now has a large base of conservative members who now know we can win. We all feel the momentum building and are ready for the next election,” concluded Villella.
